CBD Products and Hydroxychloroquine
If you have a chronic inflammatory disease, such as arthritis or lupus, your doctor may recommend a medication called a disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD). This class of drugs includes methotrexate, sulfasalazine, hydroxychloroquine and leflunomide.
They suppress CBD and Hydroxychloroquine the overactive immune system by targeting certain steps in the inflammatory cascade. These include cytokines, which are proteins secreted by immune cells that cause inflammation.
However, the effectiveness of CBD for treating rheumatoid arthritis is still unproven. Some studies suggest that it can reduce pain and inflammation, but more research is needed.
Some drugs may have negative interactions with CBD, including opioid painkillers, certain monoclonal antibodies, and GABA inhibitors. These drugs can increase CBD levels in your blood and cause dangerous effects.
Can CBD Products Be Used Safely with Hydroxychloroquine? What the Research Says
Other drugs may also slow the breakdown of CBD, causing higher doses to be active in your body longer. This can lead to side effects such as drowsiness, lightheadedness, diarrhea, nausea and dry mouth.
Do not use CBD if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in it, or if you have a history of liver disease, heart disease or a prolonged QT interval. These conditions can cause fast or pounding heartbeats, fluttering in your chest, shortness of breath and sudden dizziness.
Hydroxychloroquine has been linked to several serious side effects, including: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your face or throat and a severe skin reaction (fever, sore throat, burning eyes, skin rash with blistering and peeling). The most common side effect reported in people using hydroxychloroquine is drowsiness.
